Ed-Fi

Ed-Fi data submission involves syncing disaggregated student level data from a district or charter's Student Information System (SIS) directly to MDE's Ed-Fi servers. The steps to complete this process are unique to each SIS vendor. SIS vendors provide specific set-up guidance to their districts and charters on syncing data.

Ancestry Ethnic Origin

In 2016, the Minnesota Legislature passed changes to existing statutes that require school districts, including charter schools, to collect and report more detailed racial and ethnic demographic information for students. Read the full text of the legislation: Minnesota Statutes, sections 120B.31, subdivision 3a, and 120B.35, subdivision 3.

For information on the legislative directive regarding Ancestry Ethnic Origin data, visit the Counting All Students webpage.

Digital Equity

In order to understand which students have access to the Internet and digital devices, districts and charters will provide students and families the opportunity to complete the Digital Equity survey each school year, meeting the state reporting deadline of October 1. This information will help districts, community partners, service providers, libraries, local and state government, and philanthropic organizations prioritize resources while we work together to address disparities that impact our students and their families. Having complete, accurate information is a first step toward implementing effective digital inclusion strategies.

Digital Equity is defined by the National Digital Inclusion Alliance as, “a condition in which all individuals and communities have the information technology capacity needed for full participation in our society, democracy and economy. Digital Equity is necessary for civic and cultural participation, employment, lifelong learning, and access to essential services.”

Early Education

Early Education (EE) Enrollment will report children and families’ participation in Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) and School Readiness (SR) programs including children’s Status Begin and End Dates and attendance during that time. This is the result of an audit recommendation from the Legislative Auditor’s Office to better understand children’s participation in early learning programs.

The reporting deadline is July 15 of each year for the previous school year’s participation. The alignment to the Ed-Fi standard allows MDE to focus on the data on participation and remove previous requirements for file upload procedures. The implementation of Ed-Fi does not change how ECFE or SR are funded at the state level.

MARSS Student Accounting

The Minnesota Automated Reporting Student System (MARSS) is an individual student record system that serves as the Minnesota Department of Education's primary reporting system for student data.

Minnesota Common Course Catalogue

The Minnesota Common Course Catalogue (MCCC) is a course classification data collection intended to provide uniform information about courses that are taught by Minnesota teachers and completed by Minnesota students. Ed-Fi data submission of MCCC data will be fully implemented in school year 2023-2024.

MCCC Ed-Fi Transition Heads Up
  • MCCC data will be collected via Ed-Fi for the 2023-24 school year. Training for this transition will occur in January and February 2024. If you encounter errors from MCCC data syncing during this time, please ignore them. Technically the functionality will be in the software in August, but we will not be using it until early 2024. During fall 2023, you do not need to sync this data. If it is synced, please ignore any error messaging until the training scheduled for 1st quarter 2024 (Jan-March).

MCCC was implemented to meet state and federal requirements, including: Minnesota Statutes, section 120B.35 Student Academic Achievement and Growth; Minnesota Session Laws 2009, Chapter 96, Article 2, Section 60 Implementing Rigorous Coursework Measures Related to Student Performance; and HR 2272 America COMPETES Act of 2007 SEC. 6401.
